Property assessment list, Ulster County, 1798.

Assessment, 1798, of houses in Kingston, Marbletown and Hurley valued over one hundred dollars. The principal assessor was James Oliver, and his assistants were Andrew Snyder, Peter Van Der Lyn, Peter Marius Groen, and Gerrit DeWitt. Each assessment gives the name of the occupant of the house and of the owner (if different); the house's situation, with names of adjoining owners; description of the house, including building material, dimensions, number of stories and number of windows; outhouses and size of the lot; age and state of repair of the house; rent, and valuations by the principal assessor and the assistant assessors. The assessments are written on forms originally printed for the assessment of properties in New York City. An undated broadside, by James Oliver in his capacity as chairman of the Federal Republican Committee, entitled Address to the Electors of Ulster County, is tipped in at the beginning of the volume.
